Van
About
Discover the history of Van
Located in eastern Turkey, Van stretches along the shore of the country's largest lake, an alkaline body of water surrounded by mountain peaks. The warm and sunny summer climate favors boat excursions to Akdamar Island, where a 10th-century Armenian church stands, and swimming on still-uncrowded beaches. Van Castle, a fortress perched on a rocky spur, dominates the city and its surroundings. Local markets offer fruits, handicrafts and traditional Turkish products, while cafés serve tea and snacks on terraces. The surrounding mountains, notably Mount Erek, offer hiking trails with panoramic views over the lake. Summer festivals bring the city to life with local music and dances.

Ishak Pasha Palace
Ishak Pasha Palace is a 17th-century Ottoman fortress overlooking the Aras River valley, showcasing intricate stonework and Islamic architecture in eastern Turkey's mountainous landscape.
Lake Van
Turkey's largest lake is also the world's largest soda lake: it has no outlet, its water feels soapy to the touch and holds a single fish species, the pearl mullet. Swimming is mostly done from the shores at Edremit, south of the city.
Akdamar Island Pools
The island holds the Armenian church of the Holy Cross, built between 915 and 921, its outer walls carved with biblical reliefs. Boats cross from the jetty at Gevaş; there are no pools or bathing spots on the island.
Castle Of Van
The citadel is Urartian, cut into the rock ridge from the 9th century BC, keeping royal tombs carved in the cliff face and the trilingual inscription of Xerxes. The ruins of the old town of Van lie on the plain below.
Muradiye Şelalesi
Multi-tiered, 50m-high waterfall with spring wildflowers & summer camping, frozen in winter.
